Malchow’s Acquired By Montgomery’s

More changes come to Aberdeen this year as Malchow’s Home Furnishings has become a part of Montgomery’s, a furnishing store franchise that opened in South Dakota in 1888. Malchow’s, which has been a staple Main Street business in Aberdeen since 1945, suffered a fire in late October 2019. This fire not only totaled the furniture store, but also damaged next door business Anchor’s of Faith, and displaced multiple families who lived in the apartments above Malchow’s. Since the fire, Malchow’s has reopened at the temporary location of 309 S. Main Street.

Now that Malchow’s has been acquired by Montgomery’s, the new store will be located in the old Office Max building on US Highway 12 between Target and Walmart. The new showroom is set to open sometime this year, while an additional 10 employee staff is set to man the new business. Tom Malchow is retiring this year, and as a way to honor him, a retirement sale is planned for mid-August out of the former Office Max location as construction works towards completion.

Mark Malchow, who owns and operates Malchow’s with his father, Tom, said, “We knew from the moment we started talking with Clark and Eric Sinclair that Montgomery’s shared our business philosophies on how to take care of customers and employees, and what it means to be a long-time family-owned business in this state.”

Clark Sinclair is a 4th Generation owner and his son Eric is a 5th Generation owner of Montgomery’s. The new furniture store will honor all sales previously made at Malchow’s on a service basis only. This means that customer’s who bought furniture from Malchow’s and are in need of a repair or using their warranties can be serviced at Montgomery’s. The new furniture store will also offer the same high quality, designer furniture, flooring, and lighting as Malchow’s did and then some. A bigger location means a bigger opportunity to serve Aberdeen.

Mark Malchow is set to take over as a managing partner with Montgomery’s in 2021.
