For Lily Tobin, art has been a passion of hers for as long as she can remember.

“There are pictures of me at four or five years old, running around with a camera,” Tobin said. “My mom is a painter, and I grew up in a very creative household.”

Tobin, who was born and raised in Aberdeen, began her photography journey early in life. When she was in middle school, Tobin entered her first photography contest and qualified to advance to the regional competition at the Granary. Her passion really started to develop when she took a film class in high school.

“During my senior year of high school, I changed my mind a lot,” Tobin said. “I thought about a job that pays, and initially I wanted to pursue business. But I didn’t want to just sit at a desk job all day. I want to be creative.”

Between her senior year of high school and freshman year of college, she started her own photography business, Lily Hannah Photo. Tobin primarily focuses on portrait photography, including weddings, couples, seniors, and creative portraits. She’s also able to incorporate another passion of hers with equine photography.

“There aren’t many people doing equine photography,” Tobin said. “There is a lot of balance involved. You have to pose a horse just like you would pose a person, otherwise the photos can look a little weird.”

Before her human photo sessions, Tobin sits down with each client to discuss ideas about poses, backgrounds, and what they would like to get out of the session. Sometimes, inspiration will hit when the session starts, but proper planning can make a photo shoot even more special.

“I always try to focus on how I can make my subjects shine,” Tobin said. “Authenticity is very important to me, so I want to really show who people are.”

Tobin is set to graduate from Northern State University next year with a degree in digital media with a graphic design emphasis.

“Graphic design and photography work together well,” Tobin said. “There is a big focus in balance with both. I didn’t want to just focus solely on photography. It was important for me to find things to compliment it.”

During her time at Northern, she has worked for their newspaper, The Exponent, as a sports photographer.

“It’s a fun atmosphere,” Tobin said. “It’s different from what I usually do. There is an energy at sporting events that is hard to describe.”

In addition to her business, Tobin has participated in several art shows. She has participated in the NSU Juried Student Art Show, the Red Rooster NSU Student Art Show, and the Friends of the Arts/NSU Appreciation Social and Student Art Sale.

Overall, Tobin’s photography has been an amazing experience. After graduation, she plans on pursuing photography full time.

“I’m excited to see where it takes me,” Tobin said. //
