The Miss Aberdeen contest is a first step for Aberdeen residents who wish to participate in the South Dakota Snow Queen Festival. Each year, Miss Aberdeen, Jr. Miss Aberdeen, Little Miss Aberdeen, and Little Master Aberdeen are crowned. Prior experience isn’t required for any of the contestants. Anyone is welcome to compete.

The 2023 Snow Queen, Summer Ryan, and Jr. Snow Queen, Lilly Nelson, will be volunteering at many events throughout the year. Some of these events include Knight for a Princess, the Make-A-Wish Banquet, the Haunted Forest, and bell ringing for the Salvation Army.

Ryan and Nelson also kept busy during fair week. They assisted with visitor transport, judged the baby crawling and chili contests, and introduced rodeo contestants.

The Hub City Women of Today is the main sponsor of the Miss Aberdeen contest. They are a non-profit group that focuses on community service through volunteerism, personal growth, and fellowship. They are also able to award scholarship money to the winners.

“It’s a great way to represent the community,” Ryan said. “Everyone involved is super friendly and helpful. I’ve made a lot of new friends through Miss Aberdeen.”

Miss Aberdeen has been an opportunity for both winners to be very hands-on with their volunteer efforts.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Nelson said. “My friends thought I was crazy because I mostly do sports. It really brought me out of my shell.” //
