Rachels Challenge

The Aberdeen Public School District hosted, for the third time, the Rachel’s Challenge program. This powerful initiative, aimed at promoting kindness and eradicating bullying, coincided with the launch of a community action project by Breanna Wollman, a Bezos Scholar from Aberdeen Public School District.

Rachel’s Challenge is a nationwide initiative that seeks to honor the memory of Rachel Scott, the first victim of the tragic Columbine High School shooting in 1999. The program was born out of Rachel’s profound desire to create a chain reaction of kindness and compassion, believing that even the smallest acts of goodwill could positively impact others. Since its inception, Rachel’s Challenge has inspired millions of students, educators, and communities to embrace positivity and practice kindness.

Breanna Wollman’s Bezos Scholar Project

Adding to the excitement of Rachel’s Challenge Program, Breanna Wollman, a senior at Aberdeen Central, is set to launch her own transformative project, supported by the prestigious Bezos Scholars Program. The Bezos Scholars Program, founded by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and his family, aims to nurture leadership skills and empower young visionaries to drive positive change within their communities.

Wollman and Aberdeen Central’s Mr. Kerry Konda, a Bezos Educator Scholar, are connecting with various groups around the area to develop an idea and action plan for her project. In the summer of 2023, both Konda and Wollman attended the Aspen Idea Festival for inspiration and training for developing a community action project. According to the Bezos Scholar website, “Scholars formally select the community need they want to focus their project on and an approach for making a meaningful impact on that need. As they develop and launch their projects, scholars document outcomes and the lessons they learn to enable future student leaders to sustain the project for years to come.”

The conjunction of Rachel’s Challenge Program and Breanna Wollman’s Bezos Scholar Project marks a significant milestone for the Aberdeen Public School District. //
