Susan Kornder has been an avid supporter of community and state initiatives aimed at enhancing the lives and needs of others.

On Thursday, September 19, twelve runners will set off from the western side of South Dakota to embark on The 437 Project for its third annual event. This 437-mile relay-style run, spanning 72 consecutive hours, was conceived to emphasize the critical connection between physical and mental health. The journey will culminate in Sioux Falls on Sunday, September 22.

Among the dedicated participants is Susan Kornder, the executive director of Northeastern Mental Health Center in Aberdeen. Susan has been a committed employee for 20 years, devoting her career to enhancing access to services for individuals with mental health and substance use disorders. She has also assisted with local suicide prevention efforts in NE South Dakota. Currently the president of the South Dakota Council of Community Behavioral Health and a member of the South Dakota State Social Work Board of Examiners, Susan supports all community and state initiatives aimed at enhancing the lives and needs of others.

Susan has experienced firsthand the impact of mental health and substance use disorders, both through providing treatment to clients and within her own family. Her passion for educating and connecting people to accessible, quality services drives her advocacy for those with diverse needs. A lifelong runner, Susan finds running to be a physical, emotional, and spiritual outlet that helps keep her life in balance. Her favorite race was the Twin Cities Marathon, and as an outdoor enthusiast, she enjoys spending time outside with friends and family year-round.
On participating in The 437 Project, Susan expressed her enthusiasm: “I am most looking forward to accomplishing this with the team and the message of awareness and connection to services that this event will provide to the people of South Dakota.”

In 2023, a dedicated team of 12 community leaders and volunteers completed the ambitious 437-mile trek across the state, spearheading a campaign to raise awareness about mental health and suicide. The project has had a profound effect, with statewide support and funds raised exceeding their expectations. The initiative most importantly has shed light on critical issues of mental health and suicide, continuing vital work in this area.

Last year’s event successfully raised over $250,000 for the Helpline Center, which responds to mental health and suicide-related calls on the 988 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The Helpline Center was privileged to receive funds from The 437 Project, significantly enhancing their ability to support and inspire communities across South Dakota.
The 437 Project continues to serve as a powerful initiative, fostering both physical endurance and mental wellness while making significant strides in mental health awareness and support. //
