Food Review: Thai & Burmese Deli

P1133620

It’s been nice to see more restaurants opening up in Uptown Aberdeen’s food court. For this issue’s food review, we visited Thai & Burmese Deli, which opened up in the mall last October.

“I opened it for the family,” said owner Kue Moo. “Some immigrant parents don’t speak English, so they do labor, and when they get older it’s hard.”

Moo and his mother, Thu Zar, are in charge of cooking. Moo said that he handles the Thai food while his mother prepares the Burmese food. Moo worked in Thai restaurants in Minnesota and learned the ins and outs of restaurant cooking. While he’s always enjoyed cooking at home, things like the required prepwork and precise measurements are quite different in restaurants.

Thai & Burmese Deli features a rotating menu. Since the soups are kept on the stovetop to stay warm, different soups are served on different days to maximize kitchen space. During the first half of the week, guests can enjoy Ohn No Khao Swè, a creamy coconut soup. During the latter half, Moo serves Boat Noodles with beef broth and dark soy sauce.

When we visited, we had chicken wings and fried spring rolls for our appetizer. The spring rolls were delightfully crunchy and were served with a sauce that had a nice kick to it. We also had some Thai green tea which complimented each dish well.

For our main course, we tried the chicken curry, Pad Thai, and Ohn No Khao Swè. At Thai & Burmese Deli, the spice level of each dish can be customized. A couple of us opted to add more spice, but the dishes were delicious with it and without. The chicken curry was served with rice and had an amazing flavor. I had never had Thai food before, so I was especially excited to try the Pad Thai. We added pork to our order, but it can also be served with beef or chicken. The sweetness of the sauce and the peanuts were complimented by the fresh, crunchy bean sprouts and green onion. Moo also made sure that we tried the Ohn No Khao Swè. The creamy broth was nice, light, and refreshing. I loved how many toppings came with the soup – we had onion shallots, green onion, hard boiled eggs, and some lime to squeeze on top.

There were many other dishes that we didn’t get the chance to try, so be sure to stop by and check them out for yourself. We know we’ll definitely be back!

Thai & Burmese Deli is open on Monday through Friday from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM and on Saturday from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM at Uptown Aberdeen. They offer delivery through DoorDash. You can find them on Facebook at Thai & Burmese Deli and on Instagram at thaiandburmesedeli.

Anna’s review:

Thai & Burmese Deli is a culinary hidden gem in our Midwest town, reader. The taste that kept coming to mind was “wholesome.” Each dish was rich with flavor yet mild and nourishing! My attention bounced from plate to plate, unable to decide which dish was my definite favorite. If I HAD to pick just one thing, overall, the coconut soup was too unique not to highlight. I love coconut, but I think anyone would enjoy this soup. The coconut milk added strength to the broth without making it feel heavy or too rich!

John’s review:

This is my second time at Thai & Burmese Deli since they opened. Both times I was very impressed with their speed while not sacrificing the quality and make of their food. A pleasant surprise dish we tried was the coconut soup. Much like every dish we had, it was packed with depths of flavor and spice. My favorite dish we tried was the fried chicken wings. I found myself impressed at how fast the wings were prepared and while tasting old or dried out. The sauce that came with it was a great combination of spice and flavor (a recurring theme). I’d find myself enjoying the fried chicken wings everytime I go there.

Annie’s review:

I was very excited to try Thai food for the first time, and Thai & Burmese Deli definitely did not disappoint. I loved every dish that we tried, but I think my favorite was the Pad Thai. This dish is something that everyone can enjoy, especially since you can customize the meat and spice level. The Thai green tea was also very good. It was nice and sweet and paired well with all of the dishes we ordered. While we were eating I alternated bites of each main dish and found myself picking a new favorite each time. I’m glad that Thai & Burmese Deli was my introduction to Thai food. You can’t go wrong with any dish that you try here.
