Aberdeen’s newest bridal and formalwear boutique is now open, just in time for prom season.
ModaLane offers bridal and prom gowns, veils, jewelry, and other accessories for formal occasions. They also sell and rent tuxedos and suits. Over 200 prom dresses are available for purchase, and bridal gowns will be available soon.
Owner Laura Woolverton has worked in healthcare for 12 years, most recently as the regional director of Avera@Home, and wanted to pursue something different.
“As I progressed in leadership, I realized I wanted my own business,” she said.
Woolverton started to do research for her business last May and attended her first bridal conference in Chicago, Illinois last September. Soon after, she found partners and got into the former Finishing Touch building.
“All things fell into place,” she said. “It’s been an exciting journey.”
The word “moda” means fashion in Bohemian. Both of her grandmothers spoke the language, and she wanted something that honored her family’s roots.
Woolverton said that ModaLane will provide a unique shopping experience for customers, and that is partly why they settled on such a large space.
ModaLane is equipped with five bridal suites, each complete with its own private dressing room as well as space for guests and refreshments. Woolverton said that bridal services will be by appointment only to ensure that each bride can make the most out of each suite. The suites are also large enough to host other events such as bridal showers.
The shopping experience will also be special for students shopping for prom dresses. Woolverton said that in the future, ModaLane will offer buying parties for different schools. At these parties, students can shop with their friends and enjoy snacks, giveaways, and a photo booth.
ModaLane will also feature an area for customized apparel, such as shirts and jackets with phrases that can be used at bachelorette parties. There are also plans to offer a clothing alteration service.
The 12,700-square-foot space, which is still under construction, will feature a dedicated menswear and prom section in addition to the bridal showroom. For now, the prom dresses will be featured in the bridal space.
“We pushed hard to get ready for prom season,” Woolverton said. “We’ve worked with designers and other shops to keep up with trends and find out what girls want.”
Woolverton said that ModaLane will help bring business to Aberdeen. Many students and brides shop out of town for their formalwear,
Woolverton hopes that ModaLane will help bring customers to other Aberdeen businesses as well. Many people leave town to shop for formalwear, but having a premium experience here in town can potentially draw in customers from the surrounding area.
“We want to see success in our community,” she said. “So it’s important for us to work with our community.”
