Holgate Middle School teachers Carolyn Geyer and Mia Fries asked their 7th grade language arts students one question: Who has made a positive impact in your life? The following pieces tell the stories of people who have had a positive influence on some of our youngest residents’ lives.
“Get on the line,” exclaimed Brendon Harvey, my old hockey coach. Brendon was the best coach I could ever ask for. He would always be there for me and would help me to become an even better hockey player. Coach Harvey would always help me if I made a mistake and wouldn’t criticize me. Knowing how to be a disciplinarian while maintaining respect for us was important. Brendon was always fun to be around and never judged people. All in all, he was simply a great guy to be around, and I appreciate having him as a coach.

Mrs. Weishedel is a special person in my life. She is a great teacher! Being nice and knowing how to work with all kids are her strengths. She is an amazing teacher to me and has taught me so much about percussion, my attitude, and how to treat others. In addition, she knows how to play every instrument, which must be a hard thing to learn and teach other kids; however, she does it so well. Finally, she is funny, and at the same time, she knows how to keep everyone calm and in line; she is firm, but in a good way. I have learned so much from her, and I became better at percussion and a better person because of her.

She knows how to make me feel better when I’m feeling down and is always friendly. There are so many other reasons I could write about, but these are the main ones.

My dad has always been someone I look up to. Whether it’s his unbeatable sense of humor or his ability to offer comfort, he’s always there when I need him. He encourages me to open up and share what’s going on in my life, but he never forces his opinions on me. Instead, he lets me decide who I am and what I believe in. My dad also has a special ability to find humor even in tough times, and he knows how to laugh when life gets difficult. He’s truly the best dad I could ask for, and I wouldn’t trade him for anyone.

“The only reason I’m hard on you is because I know you can do better.” That’s what Ashley would say whenever I got discouraged about not being able to master a skill or drill. She always challenged me to push myself, both on and off the ice—skating and stickhandling in my free time. I loved how she constantly pushed me to be a better player and a stronger leader. She taught me that hard work doesn’t just benefit me; it rubs off on others and motivates them to work hard, too. Not only did she coach me to reach my potential, but she also made it a point to attend our games, always showing us how much she truly cared about each and every one of us.

It’s nice to have someone there for you, someone who says things like, “You’re a good person” or “I’m glad we’re friends.” It sounds even better when it comes from someone you’ve known your whole life, someone you grew up with in the same house—that person for me is my cousin Kai. Yes, of course you can!” My grandma loves when I can come visit and is sad when I have to leave. However, before I can leave, she gives me a big kiss. If you’ve ever gone to a 14U Cougar Hockey Game, you have probably heard a woman yelling “Skate” and a guy that’s next to her “shushing” her; that would be my parents. Have you ever wanted nice, helpful neighbors? My grandparents certainly fit this description. They help with shoveling snow or giving leftovers to their neighbors. “Parents are the anchors in a child’s life, their strength, and their foundation.” (Author Unknown) My perfect parents are Rachel and Jake Cramond. They encourage me in soccer, even if I don’t have the best game. Caring and kind describe my parents, and I can’t imagine life without them.

“Find someone who feels like home, rather than home itself.” My home is my grandmother; every hour of the day, all I think about is her. Every gift from her, whether it’s expensive or modest, means a great deal. The effort she puts forth makes me the happiest I’ve ever been. I always miss her and always feel guilty for all these kind gestures she does for me. Even during volleyball season, my grandma always came to every single game. Even though her voice may be the most silent, her voice will always be the loudest in cheering for me.
Charissa End of Horn

Who knew a yellow rock with a painted-on smile could make a kid so happy? This was what I received from my second-grade teacher, Mrs. Hermansen. She gave me and my classmates a rock during COVID, so we could look at it and know someone was thinking of us. It also served as a reminder to stay positive. She was so kind to everyone she met and left a lasting impact on them. Mrs. Hermansen made my second-grade experience unmatched by any other grade, despite COVID-19. I will forever be grateful for Mrs. Hermansen, my second-grade teacher.

My therapist, my sister, my special person. Everybody needs a person like this in their life and that person happens to be my best friend, Keira. She has been there by my side since birth. Whenever we hang out, she makes me laugh so much. Sometimes she picks me up from school, and then we go get food. Sometimes, we’ll go bother our moms at work. If I could pick one person to be stuck on an island with, it would be Keira. I can always count on her and trust her with my life. She has made a positive impact on my life. She lets my weird side come out, and I can never act “normal”.

I am grateful for my brother, Uriel, and his family. They have done so much for me. He is one of my closest friends that I grew up with when I was in first grade. I was participating in boxing, and I saw he was one of the new kids at the gym. We became friends, and we also did wrestling together. He has always been there for me and so have his siblings and parents. They treat me like their own. I’ve struggled with mom and dad issues and my mental health. I still have problems to this day with my parents, mainly my dad. And they are always there for me when I need them. I love staying the night at their house because we do family things together, such as road trips, and going to family parties together. They never fail to put a smile on my face; I love them so much, and I appreciate them and love everything they have done for me. They spend quality time with me, and that is why I’m blessed to have them as my second family. They have always told me to keep my head up no matter what and never let anyone see me with my head down. They always keep a smile on my face, even on my bad days.
Myla Acuna
Have you ever met someone nice, chill, and overall just a good person? Well, that person is my grandpa, Marty. The first reason I’m recognizing him is because he has taught me numerous skills. He taught me how to cook, clean, and even ride a bike. Marty picks me up from school when I don’t ride the bus and either hangs out with me or drops me off at the Y or The Dome. My grandpa also is my emergency contact for school. That shows that he has my back and loves me. Those are the reasons why my Grandpa is very important to me.

I feel like everyone should have a funny, loving, and smart friend or sibling in their life. In my case, it’s my sister Kiannah. Ever since I was born, Kiannah has been super loving and caring. Kiannah and I share the same type of humor and often get a kick out of the same jokes and stories. She has always been there to help and cheer me up, and I would do the same for her. “I will only go if I can paint my face!” When I hear that, I immediately know that it is my grandpa, Mark. Grandpa Mark always tries his best to show up to every sports game I or his other grandchildren have, even though there are six other grandchildren for him to cheer on. We also have made up a game to make every car ride more fun. It starts with one of us asking a question, and the answer is the name of the song playing at the moment. Lastly, he always tries to spend as much time as possible with all his grandchildren. He could play board games forever, just to be with us. Everyone needs a fun, encouraging, and supporting person in their life, like Grandpa Mark.

“A brother is a friend given by nature.” (Jean Baptiste Legouve) My brother, Weston, is someone extremely special to me. Weston is a very helpful brother, and he does a lot for me. My brother and I love going fishing during the summer; we like catching walleye, perch, croppies, and bluegill. When I come home from school, I usually have homework. He will always ask me if I need help and will give me guidance until I am done. Hunting is definitely exciting, but it is even ten times better with him. We go duck, deer, goose, and pheasant hunting. It gets us out of the house enjoying nature and spending time together. In conclusion, Weston is not only my brother, he is my best friend.

A special person in my life is my sister, Fatima! She is so sweet to everyone no matter what, even if someone is rude to her. She’s always trying to be sweet to someone, and it works! My second reason is that Fatima is so understanding. Whenever I talk to her about something, she understands. Since she’s my older sister, she knows from experience what I talk about. She comforts me, too! Lastly, Fatima is so funny. She’s always making someone laugh, somehow, even if she or the person has a bad day. If she doesn’t even try to be funny, she always makes me laugh! He makes sure we have food on the table and ensures that we eat first before he does. My dad makes our family happy and always makes us laugh. He likes to play 2k and Madden with me when he has extra time at home. Overall, my dad is the best dad. He does so many things with me like bowling, video games, basketball, and just spending time together, however we can. I always cherish the extra moments that I get with my dad.

When I think of all the good people in this world, I think of Hannah Jepsen. She is a good listener, very motivational, and a non-judgmental person. Hannah is my guitar teacher and about three years ago is when I started playing. I thought I was horrible at playing guitar and I wanted to quit, but she was there to motivate me to keep playing. Hannah is a very good listener and when I was struggling a lot with my mental health she was always by my side and helped me through it. Lastly, Hannah is a non-judgmental person and everywhere I go I feel like I‘m being judged and I don’t feel like that around her. Overall Hannah Jepsen is an awesome person and I’m so grateful to have her in my life.

Coming in at a whopping two pounds and five ounces, we have CARTER SMALLMAN! My twin brother, Carter, is my built-in best friend and sometimes my worst enemy all in one. My parents might think we’re double the trouble, but I think we’re double the fun. Despite our sibling arguments, he never fails to put a smile on my face and make me laugh. Not only is he funny, in school, he always gets his work done and is pretty smart. At times, he will even help me with schoolwork when needed. In addition, since he is one minute older than me, he tells me, “Respect your elders!” I am thankful that I have a special twin like Carter.

Everyone has that one person who has been there since day one, for me that person is my dad, Bill Geditz. He has taught me a lot over the years, like being kind to others and showing them respect. My dad has always been there for me, through thick and thin; he’s there no matter what happens. When I’m struggling with my work, he sits me down and talks about how I’m supposed to do it. Having Bill as my dad is the greatest thing to happen in my life, and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Do you have that one relative that is just the best? I do. He is my grandpa, Mark. If I need someone to cheer me up and no one else can, I can count on him. When I want to help him on the farm, he always has something for me to do, whether it’s helping him get branches out of his yard or raking up excess grass. I have also helped him with taking apart and rebuilding something. He always likes me helping him out whenever. My grandpa, Mark, is one of the people who changed my life, whether it is helping him do things on the farm, to just him being there whenever I need it.

Imagine going to a brand new school, and you don’t know anyone. So you’re nervous for your sixth grade year, but then you make a great friend named Eh Shee. He has always been an encouraging friend to me. He helps me with the homework that I need help in or games that I don’t understand. Eh Shee always gives me food and helps me to get my work done on time. He gives me ideas that I never would have thought about. Overall, Eh Shee is a very good friend and he helps me out a great deal.

Imagine having someone in your life who steps in to take care of you and your family when you need it most. I have this type of person in my aunt, YaChoo. She stepped in when my mama was in the hospital, and she made us food and took care of us. My aunt would travel from a different state to come and take care of me and my siblings. She is the most kind and caring person, but she is also fun. She plays with me and takes me out to get food. I appreciate my aunt so much and everything she has done for us.
Eh Shee
Do you have someone in your life who can make everyone feel included, keep the laughs rolling, and always be there to help out? Well, I do, and it’s my amazing brother, Corban. Whenever I need help, he’s there, whether he ends up helping me or not. Corban never makes people feel left out; he always makes sure everyone’s having fun, even if he’s not having fun. His interesting personality always brings life to the party, and his ability to connect with anyone and make them feel valued is what truly makes him stand out as someone everyone loves to be around.

“Oh yeahhhhh” If you hear that, it’s definitely coming from my little cousin Jack. He is very loving, he loves to give me hugs and make me laugh. My cousin Jack stands up for me to my family by telling them to leave me alone. He is extremely kind and hilarious. He likes to make us all laugh whenever possible. Jack is only 4, so he is very adorable. Whenever we want something, we send Jack to ask for it because nobody can say no to him. He brings so much joy into my life, and I can’t imagine how dull life would be without Jack.

Do you have that one funny person who is always there for you? I do, and he is my stepdad, Karl. He is always there to congratulate me or say that I did my best. Every time before my races, Karl or my mom make hearts with their hands. Most of the time, I drop time in those races. When we are on the way to the swim meet or on the way home, he always keeps me company and sometimes jokes around. When we are the only people awake, we jam out to some music on his phone in the car. That is why my stepdad Karl is that special person in my life.

Imagine your mom being the one and only person you really need. I say that because my mom, Natasha, tries so hard to make me have a good day. I want to recognize her because she has done so much for me. I can always count on her for help or no matter what I need. She always puts a smile on my face no matter the situation. She is the strongest person I know, taking care of me and my siblings and providing the best for us. Even though she has been through so much, my mom still tries her best no matter the situation.

I can’t think of anyone who has impacted me more than Mrs. Doeden. She is a very special person in my life because she has made my year better than it ever could have been. Without her, I don’t know if I would’ve learned to enjoy math as much. Also, after school, I stay in her room to visit with her for a couple of minutes about anything. Mrs. Doeden has done special things for me out of school, but she also did special things for me in math, like helping me learn new things. Mrs. Doeden has helped me realize that I love math. It might not seem special, but to me it meant the world.

My grandma, Peggy, is the best. She is super loving. For example, she makes me tasty food. I go over to her house sometimes to watch movies and hang out. She takes me fishing on her paddleboard and takes me to see my great grandma. In addition, Grandma Peggy is extremely giving, like she buys me clothes, food, and other necessities. My grandma is supportive by attending my football games and wrestling meets. In sixth grade, she would even come to my band concerts. This is why I know my grandma, Peggy, is the absolute best.

Is there a special person in your life? Well, my people are my cousins, Ari and Bella. One reason they are special to me is because I can talk to them about anything that is on my mind. Having someone to talk to is always a relief. Another reason Ari and Bella are my special person is because we share interests. We all like to do crafts at my grandma’s house and go swimming, boating, tubing, and more. My third and final reason is that they are overall fun to be with. It is always exciting when they are coming to visit or we are visiting them. Ari and Bella are two important people in my life.

Do you know that one person who is supportive, generous, and a joy to be around? For me, that is my grandma, Linda Urlacher. She is extremely supportive and always watches my hockey games, even the varsity games where I only play two shifts. We both enjoy baking, so when we bake together, it easily becomes the highlight of my week. My last reason she is a special person in my life is because of her generosity; she is constantly donating to charities to help kids in need. These are the reasons my grandma, Linda Urlacher, is an extremely special person in my life.

If there is one person that has impacted my life the most, it has to be my uncle, Dan. Dan is SUPER funny and always makes me laugh. I love to spend time with him, and he loves to spend time with me. My favorite way of spending time with him is when he takes me fishing. He pretty much created my love for fishing and for the outdoors. I also love going hunting with him because he always takes me to the best spots to find whatever we are hunting for. It’s also really fun when we work on his boat together. Uncle Dan has made a positive difference in my life.

A father cares for his family, and mine does exactly that. My dad, David, no matter what he has going on or how busy he is at work, will find time in his schedule to come and watch any of my events. He is also one of the most selfless, hardest working individuals I have ever met. My dad could do many more things for himself, but he chooses to do things for me and my family, instead, and acts like it’s no big deal. If you are ever in a bad mood, my dad is always there to try to make a joke or change the mood no matter who you are. In conclusion, my dad is a person I truly look up to.
Abby Frank
Do you have that one person you can go to for everything? Well, mine is my friend, Brady Heilman. Brady is super encouraging and is always making an effort to know what is happening in my life. Secondly, Brady is incredibly funny and always finds a way to make me laugh. Lastly, he and I share all the same interests. He and I love to watch sports together, like football, basketball, and baseball. For football, he likes the Broncos, and I like the Buccaneers; so whenever we play each other, it gets kind of heated. Overall, Brady is a great friend for many more reasons than I just listed.

Has there been a person in your life who would always be there for you through the tough times? I have; My aunt, Lexi, has always been there for me. When my family and I were moving away from the home I grew up in, she would always ask me if I was doing okay. She would also always tell me to call or send her a text if I needed her or if something happened at home or somewhere else. In conclusion, I am extremely grateful to have someone in my life that supports me like my aunt.

When I think of fun, I think of my dad. My dad, Jackson, tries all the time to make my sister and I laugh. Sometimes he makes movie references and jokes; Other times, he tickles us. He also tries to make sure we turn out as good people. He tells us what to do in certain situations and what’s good or bad. My dad is also very helpful. He helps us fish, and he teaches us how to. In addition, he also helped us learn to swim. These are just a few reasons why my dad is so special in my life.

My mom, Jessica, is the best mom ever and here’s why. She is the reason I am here. We were living in a bad place, then she took us and moved us up here and got a job and her own apartment. If it wasn’t for her, I probably would not be writing this. She is so strong, and I love her for that. My mom is always there for me when I need her, and I am very thankful for her. If I need or want anything, she is there for me no matter what is happening. I love her so much, and I’m very thankful for her.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like having an amazing friend since sixth grade? Well, I have, and it is Lennon Bunke. Lennon deserves to be acknowledged because he is very funny and knows how to put a smile on my face when I do not feel like it. He also knows how to make jokes to make me laugh. Also, he is very hardworking, and knows how to keep himself organized and caught up on his work. I admire him when he’s flexible about getting tasks done. Lennon is a very good sport when it comes to activities and projects. As for someone who has been my friend for over a year, I’m happy to have Lennon Bunke as my friend, and I’m blessed.

“Mothers hold their children’s hands for a short while, but their hearts forever.” (Author Unknown) My mom, Tandy, holds a special place in my heart because I would not be here if it wasn’t for her. She is an amazing person who always puts other people before herself. Specifically, she makes sacrifices for me and my brothers, so we have what we need. My mom goes out of her way to donate to charities in our community. Lastly, she takes us places like Sioux Falls to see my cousin perform in the show choir. Forever my mom will hold a special place in my heart.

“Stay focused.” That’s what my dad tells me during every hockey game while my mom is cheering from the stands. First, when she is home from work, she usually goes out of her way to get my sister and me a souvenir from a big city she visited for work. Next, my dad is the nicest person you’ll ever meet. He puts up with my shenanigans, is super chill, and always willing to hang out. HE always wakes me up on open weekends asking if I want homemade breakfast. My parents are amazing. They always go out of their way to come to all of my and my sister’s events, no matter what. These are some of the special people in my life.
