PICKLEBALL REMAINS THE fastest-growing sport in America, and it shows no signs of slowing down in Aberdeen. With demand for pickleball courts at an all-time high, the city and local pickleball enthusiasts came together to fund three additional outdoor courts at Manor Park.

With a total price tag of $242,000, the renovated space now has a total of six outdoor courts and a player’s plaza, with benches and covered seating. Local pickleball players raised $120,000 toward the project.

It’s been wonderful to see people of all ages, from pre-teens to retirees, out playing the game together,” said Matt Braun, director of the Aberdeen Parks, Recreation, and Forestry department. “The new courts should help ease some of the crowding we were seeing before.

On a sweltering July afternoon, the recently opened courts were bustling. Mallory Gauer was visiting family from Omaha, and brought her mother, sister, and nephew out to play.

“My immediate thought was these courts are nicer than much of what we have in Omaha,” Gauer said. “It’s so nice to have shade. This is a great space for people of all levels to come out and play.”
