SADDLE CORRAL OPENED ITS doors in July. They will be selling new and used Western and English tack, apparel, and meat from The MeatHouse. Jesse and Julie Morehouse got the idea for their business because their boys are involved in 4-H rodeo.
“When we needed saddles for them, the closest place was in Mitchell,” Jesse said. “It’s two and a half hours one way, and during the drive I thought, ‘Why don’t we start that?’ And the ideas flew after that.”
They purchased the former Harr Motors building at the end of April and started remodeling the space in May. Jesse, who is a partial owner of The MeatHouse in Andover, thought that they could use some of the retail space to sell meat in Aberdeen as well.
Aberdeen used to have more places to purchase tack. Jesse said that before opening Saddle Corral, the closest places to find tack were Mitchell, Fort Pierre, Rapid City, and Sioux Falls. Julie said that Saddle Corral will be the only English tack dealer in South Dakota.
“We want to work with as many local places as we can,” Morehouse said. “We don’t want to run anyone out. It’s better to work together and not against anyone.”
For example, Jesse said that they’ll carry different styles of apparel than places like Hitch’n Post, suggest businesses like Diamond Dry Cleaning for pressing and starching shirts, and refer customers to local leather workers for any major saddle repairs.
Offering used tack can help offset some of the costs associated with showing horses.
Jesse said that even buying used, just getting the basic saddle, bridle, halter, bit, and blankets can cost around $1,000. Saddle Corral can also resize saddles.
“You don’t want to buy a saddle every time you trade a horse,” Jesse said, “and saddles have to fit kids as they grow.”
Julie said that they’ve hired knowledgeable people that show horses and know what clothing is in. Saddle Corral will also have a donation box for show clothes. Children that compete in 4-H, as well as organizations like Spurs will have access to the donations…
