IN OUR LAST ISSUE, WE ASKED OUR READERS TO submit some of their family recipes. It’s always interesting to hear about why someone likes a particular recipe, and it’s even more fun to hear about the other traditions and celebrations in which these dishes are served. To kick things off, we’re going to share a couple of our own family recipes that have been staples at our holidays, family gatherings, and plain-old family dinners.
Growing up, my grandpa–who we called Poppi–was the family chef. I fondly remember him cooking up a storm in the kitchen, watching several pots as he prepared both a turkey and a ham for our holiday dinners. His broccoli casserole was guaranteed to show up on the table during Thanksgiving and Christmas, and it’s become synonymous with those holidays.
Fellow food reviewer and graphic designer Anna shared a recipe from her mother, Yolonda Jahrraus. Crabby Shrimpy Pasta Salad is a big hit at any gathering, but it gives hot summer picnics and backyard pool parties an extra fresh addition. The crunchy peppers contrast well with soft crab pieces and noodles. What says summer fun more than crab salad? Nothing, that’s what. //
