The Housekeepers by Alex Hay81Cp3Mabjcl. Ac Uf10001000 Ql80

The blend of historical fiction with suspense and mystery, along with the unique premise of a large-scale heist, certainly makes this an intriguing read. The character development and the countdown-style sequence of the heist add to the excitement.  For anyone who enjoys a good Ocean’s Eleven style plan, this book is for you. Alex Hay’s debut novel, The Housekeepers, is technically historical fiction, but could also be categorized as a suspenseful mystery. The story takes place at the grandest home on Park Lane in 1905 where the friction between the nouveau riche owners and the servants of the house has hit a new high when the ambitious housekeeper, Mrs. King, is suddenly let go from service. Could it all be part of the elaborate plan devised by the shrewd Mrs. King? The plan is to empty the house by stealing every item from the audaciously furnished seven-story home. Every piece of furniture, painting, jewelry, right down to the very last thread of carpet is to be taken out of the house right from under the Madame’s nose and immediately sold at auction. As in most debut novels, the author spends several early chapters building the cast of unique characters and that can be a bit confusing if you are listening to the audiobook. Don’t let that dissuade you from this intriguing read. Mrs. King was born into a family of criminals and has grown up surrounded by pawnbrokers, actors, and other thieves. She puts together an elite group of seven intelligent and skilled women to enact her revenge in the form of a large-scale heist. You witness the plan unfold in a countdown-style sequence. The ending promises closure to all those involved, with everyone getting what they deserve. Jasmine Blackborow’s narration adds to the impact of this wonderful listen. I look forward to the next book by Alex Hay.

Saving Emma showcases Eskens’ unparalleled ability to create a fast-paced narrative that engages readers from start to finish. With this latest work, he continues to captivate his audience, solidifying his reputation as a master storyteller in the genre of legal thrillers. Fans of his previous works can expect another riveting novel that combines the elements of suspense, legal expertise, and a morally complex narrative that is sure to leave a lasting impression. Saving Emma is one of my best reads for 2023. //
